Windows Backup over secure WebDav - "Mutual Authentication failed"
Hello, I would like to backup my system hard disk using Windows 7 Backup over SSL-secured WebDav to my NAS box. The NAS box runs FreeBSD with Apache 2.2 (also tried lighttpd with identical results). I signed the server certificate with my own CA and made my Windows PC trust the CA. Authentication method is "digest". I could sucessfully map my WebDav folder as a network drive (using something like "net use W: \\my-nas-hostname@SSL\webdav"), but curiously, when I try to use the folder for Windows Backup, I get the following message in the "Set up backup" dialog: "Mutual Authentication failed. The server's password is out of date at the domain controller. (0x80070575)". This is strange, since authentication works perfectly when mapping the folder to a drive letter. Any suggestions?

I just realized that authentication doesn't work as well when mapping the folder as a network drive - I just accidentally disabled authentication for the /webdav folder... This is so terribly frustrating - all I want to do is backup my Windows PC securely to my NAS, I don't care with which protocol as long as it doesn't require Windows on the server side (it's a 500MHz low power embedded box that doesn't even have a VGA adapter, so Windows Server 2008 definitely isn't an option). Any suggestions welcome. I've already tried unencrypted WebDAV over an SSH tunnel, but that's painfully slow. Why can't I just use something like SFTP or FTPS ? So much about MSFT and their support for long established open standards *sigh* ...

Hi, I would like to confirm the following questions first: 1. Can you backup the files to other hard drives, such as internal hard drive, external hard drive and DVDs? 2. Can you backup the files to the NAS after disabling SSL normally? If this issue only occurs when trying to backup to your NAS, I would like to suggest you update the firmware and software for the NAS, the router firmware and the network card driver for Windows 7. If the file transferring to your NAS is slow, you may also try to increase MTU size to check the result. Please also contact the NAS support for further assistance.
